Why is Mazu divided into the first mother, the second mother, and the third mother?
The diversity of Mazu beliefs reflects the changing demands for gods in different regions and periods. The titles such as Auntie, Second Auntie, and Third Auntie are not a division of levels, but are created by the region, temple, or special prayers of believers. For example, the eldest mother is often seen as the guardian of navigation, the second mother may be associated with the protection of the family, and the third mother may be linked to a specific industry or group of people. These different names reflect the inclusiveness and flexibility of Mazu belief and also enrich the image of the Mazu deity. Only by deeply exploring the cultural context behind these names can we more fully understand the essence of Mazu belief.
